Why “Organic” Is More Than Just a Label

It happens to me often: I rush into an organic supermarket to buy something and I just grab the first product I find, supported by the lovely thinking “Oh, it’s organic, so it’s good”.

Then I go home, I read the label and I find out that that product is not as sustainable as I wanted to think. Ouch!

It’s kay, I learned that I’m not going to buy that product again and that being in a rush is always a bad idea, but…

hey — let’s be honest.

You probably already read labels and try to buy “the right thing.” But sometimes it feels like too much: so many labels, so many rules, and prices that make you think twice.

Here’s the good news: going organic doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. And no, it’s not just for wealthy people or health freaks. It’s about making small, smart choices that protect your health and the planet — without stressing over every item in your cart.

Why Going Organic Matters More Than You Think

Most of the fruits and veggies in regular stores are sprayed with hundreds of chemicals while organic farms are only allowed to use less than 20 carefully controlled pesticides (against the 400 or more of conventional farming). There is a lot of discussion about whether organic and conventional pesticides are equally toxic. But here are the maths that leave no doubt: The dose makes the poison, and in conventional agriculture you have more than 20x more poisons than in organic farming.

That means less junk in your body, better soil for the future, and food that’s grown with care.

But here’s something most people don’t know:

Not all organic food is the same.

Not All Organic Is the Same: What to Watch Out For

Some big brands follow the basic organic rules but focus on mass production and shelf life. Their goal? Selling more, not necessarily growing the healthiest, tastiest food.

On the other hand, small organic farmers go beyond the checklist. They protect the soil, care about animals, and grow food that’s bursting with flavor and goodness. Furthermore, buying from them means you're supporting a small business with one or more families behind it. You’re not giving your money to big corporations where only few win.

Tip: Check your local farmers’ markets or neighborhood shops. You’ll taste the difference!

Easy First Steps: Where to Start Without Feeling Overwhelmed

Let’s keep it simple. You don’t need to change everything overnight. Start with the foods that tend to carry the most chemicals. Here’s your starter list:

  • Tangerines,

  • Lemons,

  • Oranges,

  • Grapes,

  • Pears,

  • Berries of any kind.

These are the biggest offenders — so going organic here makes a big difference.

Tip: stay away from fruits and vegetables that look perfect, bright and huge (you know, like the ones you see in cartoons) but opt for smaller, not so perfect and bright produce. The first ones are usually massively produced in greenhouses, often out of season, and are highly resource-intensive. While the second ones are most likely to have been produced locally and with no pesticides.

And here’s another big one to choose organic: meat and dairy.

Animals on organic farms aren’t stuffed with antibiotics or fed pesticide-heavy grains. Their health becomes your health. Plus, they’re raised in a way that’s better for the planet.

Small Choices, Big Change

Here’s the magic part: every small change you make sends a message. You’re telling stores, brands, and your community that you care — and that you want better. The more people do it, the more the market shifts.

You’re not just helping yourself. You’re inspiring change around you.
